Periodontal Disease (Gingivitis)
What is it?
Gingivitis is an inflammation of gum tissue – the beginning of gum disease. Gums bleed easily when poked or brushed, and are a little puffy and red. The gums become irritated and inflamed when bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) buildup along the gum line. On the bright side, gingivitis is preventable and even reversible. Bacterial plaque is a filmy substance which can easily be removed from the teeth with good brushing and flossing. Gingivitis is easily treatable with good hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.
